CYCLING COACHING by CHRIS MCBURNIE

  What Athletes are Saying...

I have found Chris's coaching to be very sensitive to my goals, lifestyle, and personality. This tailored approach helped me pursue a number of goals, including making the podium at collegiate nationals in my first collegiate season. Success came in many forms, and failure also reared it's ugly head, but from it all, I came away knowing that I had a coach who tried his darndest to make me realize the most important thing in cycling. And I'd have to say he succeeded. I leave it to others to discover for themselves what limits they too can overcome.

As a father of a young athlete, what impresses me most about Coach McBurnie is that he stresses the importance of the complete person. He understands that balance among family, education and social responsibilities are critical in a young rider's development. When we first began working with Coach McBurnie, he evaluated my son's motor skills and endurance base and then performed a thorough analysis of our resources, i.e. available time to ride, training partners, equipment and cross training opportunities. After weighing these factors with our family circumstances, he then put together a personalized plan with clear objectives and realistic, attainable goals. Under Coach McBurnie’s guidance and with a very reasonable training plan, my son has achieved things most riders can only dream of. More important then being a National Champion though, my son has learned the value of hard work and time management as he strives to be a top student, a role model for his siblings, and a contributing member to our community. Coach McBurnie wouldn’t have it any other way.

Chris has been a great inspiration throughout my first year of cycling. He has kept my spirits high throughout my toughest times, both on and off the bike. My personal goals at the start of my cycling career were non-existent, as I was unsure what to expect of myself as a rider. Years of soccer, basketball, rowing, skiing, and running had led me to be an athlete who was determined to do whatever it took to be at the top. After placing near to last in my first race, I thought my chances of being a cyclist had been crushed. However, Chris kept me grounded and helped me to focus on what was important to me. I set two goals to achieve during the season and I achieved both. Chris has also helped me to become far more educated on how to train properly with the aid of tools like a heart rate monitor. I have found Chris to be very knowledgeable. His application of this knowledge is excellent, giving me an obvious advantage over many others.

Chris is an excellent coach and a great guy. Having worked with him in both the context of the empire state games and on a personal coaching level, he has helped me reach for better results and attain them. His work with the games team in coaching and race tactics (not to mention general manging) has helped the ADK region consistently bring home good results year after year. As my personal coach his help in my 07 season was indispensable and he went through great lengths to build me schedules and plans that focused on my weaknesses and helped me build into my most successful season so far. I could not recommend anyone more emphatically. Chris is an awesome coach and a great friend.

I first met Chris while competing at the 2006 Empire State Games. That 2006 season had been my first full season of “dedication” to cycling, and I had just upgraded to a category 3. This being said, I had little idea of how to make the most of my training time while out on the bike. Chris approached me at the games and asked whether or not I had a coach. The answer was of course no. We met shortly after to get to know one another and begin a training plan tailored to my needs. What impressed me the most was the detail of the questions Chris asked before we even talked about any training. He really was interested in my background and where I was coming from. That fall, as I raced my Collegiate mountain bike and cyclocross schedule, my training had a purpose and my results improved. I had a weekly training schedule from Chris with a detailed layout of my workouts that was clear and easy to follow, as well as a lengthy conversation each week for him to monitor my progress. We continued through the winter and I had a great Collegiate road season and quickly upgraded to a category 2. Had I not followed such a structured plan I surely wouldn’t have seen the rapid progression as I did this past season. Chris was there to guide me through and happy to answer any questions I ever had regarding my training or racing.
